# Compassion

*Two distinct paths meet a level bridge without merging*

In this teaching, compassion is not agreement with another person or adoption of their view. It is the support expressed through accepting that their point of view is valid for them while one's own is valid for oneself.

## Equal validation without agreement

The distinction is between accepting a viewpoint's validity for the person who holds it and treating that viewpoint as one's own. Bashar calls the resulting state “total equal validation and acceptance,” and identifies it with pure compassion.

## Compassion and forgiveness

*Three separate shoreline paths pass through an open passage without converging*

Forgiveness is presented alongside allowance, acceptance, compassion, and understanding. Within the stated logic, when each person's right to believe as they choose is supported, neither person's belief is violated; Bashar therefore says there is nothing to forgive.

## Empathy without sympathy or pity

Compassion may include empathy, which Bashar describes as synchronizing with another individual in order to understand their experience. In this framing, empathy may help someone assist another person in re-guiding their energy where they wish it to be, whereas sympathy is described as reinforcing misery and pity as judging the other person.

## Practical implications

When encountering a conflicting viewpoint, the teaching offers a distinction a learner can notice: accepting that the view is valid for its holder does not require abandoning one's own view. The practice described is support for the other person's right to believe, rather than agreement.

When offering that support in a teaching relationship, the additional distinction is to understand another person's experience through empathy without reinforcing their misery through sympathy or judging them through pity.

## Representative passage

Forgiveness is allowance, acceptance, compassion, understanding. Acceptance means you accept that their point of view is valid for them, while yours is valid for you. In that sense, there is nothing to forgive if you stay in the state of total equal validation and acceptance, and that is also simultaneously a state of pure compassion. Compassion is support.— Bashar,

You can have empathy. You can have empathy in your compassion. Sympathy, no. Pity, no. Empathy, yes. Empathizing is simply synchronizing your vibration with another individual so that you can understand them. You can understand their experiences. You can understand what they are going through so that perhaps you can assist them in re-guiding their energy back to the place they wish to be. So empathy can be a tool of teaching, yes, not sympathy in the sense of reinforcing their misery, not pity in the sense of judging them.— Bashar,
