# Depression

In Bashar's teaching, what your society labels "depression" is not an inherent flaw or a purely negative state. It is reframed as a natural inward-turning — a gathering of the persona to reassess and re-center — that becomes a prolonged, painful spiral only when the surrounding definitions (yours and other people's) stamp it as wrong. The single clearest statement in the linked transcripts is that depression is a form of meditation: going within to find the answers you know do not exist outside.

## Depression as meditation, not failure

Bashar's starting move is to overturn the definition itself. Your society, he says, holds a belief that depression is inherently negative — "and it isn't." Read literally:

Depression is only meditation, going inward to find the answers you know don't exist outside of you — a re-centering of yourself, a gathering together of all the different aspects of your persona, a board meeting. It is a reassessment of the definition of your life, so that when you emerge you are literally a new person.— Bashar,

The practical consequence follows immediately: when the people around the depressed person say "what's wrong with you, can't you handle your life?", they convert what was a neutral inward reassessment into a negative idea, and "the individual compounds their negative meditation." The definition applied to the state determines whether it completes itself (you emerge a new person) or spirals.

## Sympathy versus true support

*Two empty seats share a steady shore light while a separate dark water eddy remains beyond them*

The same exchange draws a sharp line between sympathy and true support. In your society, support and love are very often represented in the format you call sympathy, "and that is not sympathetic in the sense of true support or love. True support and true love is not that which reinforces misery." You can empathize — you can appreciate that the person is creating something difficult for themselves — "but those that truly believe in them will not send the sympathy."

What Bashar recommends instead is to reflect, "with whatever form of expressive love you can," your belief in your friend's indestructibility and eternalness, and the recognition that anything she is going through, no matter how miserable it seems, "is ultimately only temporary, always." That is offered as the real support, in contrast to reinforcing the misery.

## The threshold melancholy of awakening

A second exchange in the same session shades the picture. A questioner describes years of deep grief and a sense of being pulled, wanting to leave this plane. Bashar names this "a typical symptom of individuals who begin to awaken into their true expansiveness and the fact that they exist on all levels at once" — a melancholy symptom of expansion, leaving you half in and half out "on the threshold of all the habitual ideas of regret, guilt, and remorse." The way through is not to leave the plane but to recognize you can create the expansiveness where you are: "you create heaven on Earth instead of having to leave Earth to go to heaven." The pull itself is reframed as the future self calling, "come on, you made it, you're doing fine."

## Practical implications

Watch the definition you apply to the state. If you treat a dark, inward-turning period as proof of brokenness, you feed the spiral; if you allow it as a reassessment, it can complete itself and you can emerge different. This is a reframe of meaning, not a substitute for clinical care.

Distinguish empathy from sympathy. Empathy acknowledges the difficulty without reinforcing the misery; reinforcing misery in the name of love is what Bashar calls the false form of support.

Reflect the person's indestructibility, not their fragility. The recommended stance toward a friend in a dark period is to hold, in whatever form of expressive love you can, the view that they are eternal and that what they are experiencing is temporary.

Respect ordinary boundaries. Nothing in the session is offered as medical, legal, or financial direction. The teaching concerns the definition you bring to the state and the stance you take toward it; where clinical depression is present, clinical support remains its own domain.

## Representative passages

Depression is only meditation, going inward to find the answers you know don't exist outside of you — a re-centering of yourself, a gathering together of all the different aspects of your persona, a board meeting. It is a reassessment of the definition of your life, so that when you emerge you are literally a new person.— Bashar,

True support and true love is not that which reinforces misery. You can empathize, you can appreciate that they are creating something difficult for themselves — but those that truly believe in them will not send the sympathy.— Bashar,

It is a melancholy symptom that allows you to experience the expansion but leaves you half in, half out on the threshold of all the habitual ideas of regret, guilt, and remorse… Now you are discovering you can actually create it where you are and bring all of that expansiveness to you, so you create heaven on Earth instead of having to leave Earth to go to heaven.— Bashar,
