# Discernment

*A solitary observer pauses at two equally open paths, holding a small inner compass*

Discernment, in Bashar's teaching, is the nonjudgmental capacity to recognize what is and is not aligned with your preferred frequency. It is deliberately framed against judgment and invalidation: discernment observes who or what is of your vibration without condemning what is not. Across the linked sessions it appears in four distinct forms — recognizing the alignment of another person, distinguishing excitement from anxiety or fear, distinguishing a higher-self answer from an ego answer, and sorting the relevance of outside information — and in every case the test is energetic rather than moral.

## Discernment of other people

When asked how to be clearer about the people one draws in, Bashar frames discernment as a deliberate pause rather than a verdict. Take a moment to look and see who is really there instead of leaping in. This is not judgment or invalidation of the other; it is the objective recognition of who is and is not of your frequency. Pacing gives the other person time to reveal more signals, and someone with something to hide will often remove themselves rather than stay for that unfoldment — itself a useful signal.

## Discernment of excitement versus fear

Because excitement and anxiety can feel physiologically similar, Bashar locates the difference in honesty about underlying beliefs. You have to be willing to discover that you may actually be harboring negative beliefs you do not prefer, and you cannot be afraid to find fear. Once a fear is identified consciously it becomes transformable; without that willingness, excitement and anxiety remain blurred.

The mechanism is belief-first: a feeling is always the result of a definition you already hold to be true, so an unwanted feeling is a clue to examine the belief that produced it.

A second axis of the same discernment appears in the question, "Is this based on control, or is it based on freedom?" Bashar suggests checking the energy of any inner response for fear, suppression, judgment, and invalidation versus illumination, connection, and neutrality. A response that is controlling, fearful, segregating, or judgmental is the ego; one that illuminates your true frequency and preferred reality without invalidation is the higher self.

## Discernment as ongoing refinement

Rather than a one-time judgment, discernment is presented as a faculty that strengthens with use. The more you act only on what matches your preferred vibration and the less you act on what does not, the sharper your discernment becomes — until you can detect even small amounts of a non-preferred vibration and no longer settle for "close to what I want." Each circumstance can be used to practice this refinement, noticing sooner and sooner what does and does not carry your frequency.

## Skepticism, gullibility, and cynicism

Bashar draws a clear line between healthy skepticism and the look-alikes that block it. Skepticism is an open-minded willingness to explore, to look at evidence, and to allow a new belief to challenge an old one. Gullibility and cynicism, although they look like opposites, share the same structure: "I believe what I believe, and nothing will change that despite any evidence to the contrary." The gullible accept without discernment; the cynical dismiss without discernment; both are fixed belief masquerading as response.

## Accuracy versus relevance

When asked to confirm or deny a body of outside material, Bashar declines to rule on objective accuracy and redirects the questioner to relevance. What matters is whether the information is relevant for you; something can be accurate for another person and still not be accurate for you. The invitation is to absorb what you can actually take in and act on it before demanding more.

This relevance criterion echoes the broader teaching that any proposed technique or claim is best treated as an experiment you run for yourself.

## Practical implications

Treat a strong reaction to a person, idea, or practice as information about your own definitions first; the feeling points back to a belief you hold, and examining that belief is the productive work.

When you cannot tell whether an inner pull is excitement or compulsion, get willing to find the fear underneath; once it is conscious, it becomes movable.

Use contrast — including the experience of something definitively not you — to clarify what is you, without needing to condemn the contrast.

Evaluate outside claims by personal relevance and applicability rather than by demanding an external verdict on their accuracy; act on what you have already been given before seeking more.

Stay open to new evidence; the fixed-belief stance — whether it accepts everything or dismisses everything — is what discernment dissolves.

These implications are discernment-as-practice, not a substitute for medical, legal, financial, or other professional evaluation where those are needed.

## Representative passages

Take a moment of pause and take time to look and see who is really there instead of leaping in. This is not judgment or invalidation; it is objectively recognizing who is and is not of your frequency. A natural pace gives people time to reveal more signals, and someone with something to hide may not want to take that time.— Bashar,

Honesty. Honest self-examination. You have to be willing to discover that you may actually be harboring negative beliefs that you don't prefer. You cannot be afraid to find fear. … If you're not afraid, you'll know the difference. You'll be able to discern the difference between excitement and anxiety.— Bashar,

Is the idea based on control or is the idea based on freedom? … Is it suppressing or preventing, segregating, disconnecting me from something that I know is true for me? Or is it helping to illuminate the idea of my true self, my true frequency, my preferred reality? Is it judgmental or non-judgmental?— Bashar,

Skepticism, by definition, is an open-minded state of a willingness to explore something, a willingness to look at what you call evidence … and a willingness to allow for a new belief to come in to challenge the old belief you may have been holding on to.— Bashar,

I cannot give you a sense of the accuracy, I can only ask you to discover what is relevant for you. … It doesn't matter whether something in a sense is actually accurate, because if it's accurate for you, it may still not be accurate for someone else. So it's really about relevancy.— Bashar,
