# Ego

*A small clear viewing lens rests within a broader stable waterside shelter*

The ego, in Bashar's teaching, is not an enemy to defeat or a nuisance to silence — it is the part of your consciousness designed to keep you focused in the physical reality you chose and to represent your conscious decision-making. Ego by itself is not a negative term; it is a neutral focusing mechanism. The work is not to dissolve it but to form an equal alliance with it, letting it do its narrow job and stopping the overburdening that produces what is called the "negative ego."

## The ego's one job

The ego's only job, really, is to keep you focused in physical reality in order to have physical experiences — that is it. Bashar compares it to the diving mask you put on when you go deep-sea diving: the mask exists because it makes it easier to see under the water, otherwise your vision is fuzzy. The physical personality needs ego in order to focus on the physical and have the experience at all; you literally need ego to focus you in a physical reality experience.

This focus is also why every belief is self-reinforcing: the ego's job is to add energy to whatever belief you are holding, to make it seem as if no other belief is possible, so that you can focus on it strongly enough to actually have the physical experience that goes with it. The ego amplifies beliefs to keep you focused in physical reality — that is its proper function, not a malfunction.

## When the mask is asked to run the ocean

Trouble arises only when the ego is taught that it must run everything — a job it was never built for. The diving-mask metaphor makes the point precisely: if you tell the mask that it must not only clarify your vision but also control all the fish that come to you, in what order you see them, exactly how deep you go, what ocean you swim in, and what result you get out of the dive, then the mask cracks under the strain, because it is not designed to do all that. It is only designed to help you see clearly in whatever you have chosen to see. The ego cracks for the same reason when it is handed jobs that do not belong to it.

The biggest improper job is figuring out how something is going to happen. The physical mind / ego is not designed, not capable, literally not designed to know how something is going to happen; that belongs to the higher mind, the "person on the boat" who can see all the way to the horizon. When the ego forgets it has a helpmate in the template reality called the higher mind, it concludes it must figure out the how on its own — and ends up slamming into walls, bouncing off rocks, insisting on paths it was taught to believe are the quickest when they are actually the longest.

## The negative ego is an overburdened ego's resentment

What people call the "negative ego" is not a separate evil entity — it is the recoil of an ego given more than its job description. When you put too much on its shoulders, it builds up resentment because it was not designed to carry that weight; that resentment is what becomes the negative, out-of-control ego. The same dynamic explains why the ego fears annihilation when higher consciousness is invited in: having been told it is in control of everything, it interprets the arrival of the higher mind as being replaced, fired, kicked out. Once it is told, "No, that is not your job description — this is your job description," it relaxes: "Oh, that is easy, I can handle that. Now let the team come in, let the higher mind come in."

> — Understanding The Egos Job (qa-4), [Source](https://sassani.app/source-transmissions/understanding-the-egos-job)

The cycle can escalate: when you scare the negative ego by making it think you will abandon it, it scares you back by conjuring a future to avoid, covering the reality you could have with a smokescreen so that you will not move in that direction. The remedy is reassurance, not warfare.

## Negotiate, do not annihilate

Because the ego's only real fear is of being left out or annihilated, Bashar's consistent instruction is to negotiate with it — to treat it as a partner whose job is being honored, not a problem to be removed. You have to learn how to negotiate with it: let it know you appreciate it, that it is doing its job, and that this is all it has to do, so it no longer has to bear the weight of the world on its little shoulders. You are not tricking it, hiding anything, trying to annihilate it, or kill it; you are letting it do the job it was designed to do and working in partnership with it. Every idea you have separated yourself into can now be brought back into a holistic partnership where everything benefits.

A single sentence often summarizes the stance: just communicate with the ego and let it know that in blending yourself and integrating yourself, you are not going to leave the ego out.

> — Ego Negotiation As Positive Challenge (qa-1), [Source](https://sassani.app/source-transmissions/ego-negotiation-as-positive-challenge)

And when the question is which part of you is doing the negotiating, Bashar's answer is that the very act of proposing a fair negotiation already brings the higher mind to the table — the higher mind is all about balance and fairness, so by speaking its language you have already invited it in.

## Practical implications

The ego teaching is metaphysical framing, not a clinical or psychological protocol; it is offered as a way to relate to an aspect of your own consciousness, not as diagnosis or treatment of any condition. The practical lever it offers is relational. Bashar suggests treating the inner negotiation as a literal business deal with a partner who needs reassurance: honor the belief systems the ego has created, give it the first win, then ask for incremental latitude (say, "I will keep working with 90% of this belief, give me 10% to play with and I will show you it can work"), and prove over time that the old beliefs are no longer necessary for the ego to keep winning. Full disclosure matters — the ego sabotages only when it feels it has not been given a fair deal.

> — To Transform The Ego Mind (qa-1), [Source](https://sassani.app/source-transmissions/to-transform-the-ego-mind)

A second implication is about self-directed anger. When anger arises at having chosen a distressing experience, Bashar treats it as a clue rather than a verdict on the ego: the anger is the recognition that you put yourself in that position and are not taking yourself out of it, and you can use it to find the belief you bought into that makes it seem all right to continue that way. The work is to identify the belief, not to wage war on the ego.

> — Being A Whole Person (qa-3), [Source](https://sassani.app/source-transmissions/being-a-whole-person)

Finally, Bashar describes the balanced end-state as play, not effort. A balanced ego structure lets you experience yourself as a joyful, playful child, just experiencing yourself rather than thinking about yourself experiencing it. Bashar reports his own civilization carries enough ego to keep focused in physical reality to whatever degree they wish, but does not experience the negative ego at all — modeling the integration being described.

## Representative passages

The optimal way to quiet the ego is to allow the ego to do the job it was designed to do and stop putting more pressure on it than it is designed to handle. The ego's only job, really, is to keep you focused in physical reality in order to have physical experiences. That's it. … The ego is like the diving mask that you put on when you go deep sea diving. … if you tell the diving mask … you must take upon yourself the ability to control all the fish that come to me, in what order I want to see them, and exactly how deep I go, and what ocean I swim in … then the mask cracks under the strain because it's not designed to do all that.— Bashar,

It is that resentment, that recoil of the ego that creates the negative ego. Because once you put too much on its shoulders, it builds up a resentment because it wasn't designed to do that. … Just let it do its job, let it know it's loved for doing its job, let it know it belongs, and that it will not be annihilated just because you're going to allow other levels of consciousness to do their job in tandem with it as well.— Bashar,

You have to learn how to negotiate with it. You have to learn to give it something. You have to learn to let it know that you appreciate it, that it's doing its job, but that's all it has to do, so that it doesn't have to bear the weight of the world on its little shoulders, which are not designed to carry that weight. … You're not tricking it, you're not hiding anything, you're not trying to annihilate it, you're not trying to kill it. It won't die. You are letting it do the job it was designed to do and you're working in partnership with it.— Bashar,
