# Neutral Prop

The neutral-prop teaching is the principle that nothing in physical reality has built-in meaning. Every circumstance, event, and object is fundamentally neutral — blank, empty, devoid of meaning until you decide what meaning it has. You supply the meaning (consciously or unconsciously), and the meaning you assign completely determines the effect you derive. A single event can yield a positive or negative outcome depending entirely on the meaning infused through your response.

## The gift of meaninglessness

Bashar frames the meaninglessness of life as the greatest gift, not a bleak absurdity: "The greatest gift all of you have ever been given is that life is meaningless — you are designed to give life meaning." The mechanism is strictly mechanical. Negative meaning in produces negative effect out; positive meaning in produces positive effect out. Every situation has the ability to serve "double duty" — you decide which effect it will have by the definitions you assign to it.

This is why a career-ending injury, for example, can be re-read not as an accident blocking excitement but as an orchestration that turns you in another direction. The re-reading is not denial; it is the assignment of a meaning that makes the positive result extractable. Bashar's framing is that you cannot perceive what you are not the vibration of — so only by holding the state of "this must have happened for a positive reason" do you eventually perceive how it actually served you.

## The neutral gear and the limbo state

The same neutrality operates structurally, moment to moment. Bashar describes physical reality as discontinuous — flickering on and off like frames of film, with nothing-gaps between each something-moment. Those gaps are the "neutral gear" that makes change possible: without a neutral between moments, you would have to overcome the entire inertia of the universe to alter anything. The nothing-gaps are where you shift direction.

This maps onto the lived experience Bashar calls the limbo or "watering" state — a period of floating free in the middle of a vast array of opportunity, in neutral, picking and choosing which reality to crystallize next. The teaching is that you are not stuck during limbo; you are in the deliberate neutrality that lets you choose what to grow in your garden. Crying and laughing are both described as centering releases — one from a negative point of view, one from a positive — that deliver you to the same neutral where choice happens.

## Why old definitions survive awakening

Neutrality also explains a common pattern: someone reaches an expanded, "nothingness" state of consciousness and then collapses into depression or anger. Bashar's diagnosis is definitional, not mystical: "Depression is meditation judged." Old definitions can take any level of energy and turn it positive or negative. The collapse often comes from the false belief that spiritual enlightenment means no longer being aware of negativity — when in fact the opposite is true. Becoming more aware of negativity while still believing you shouldn't be produces a negative reaction. The fix is not to suppress negativity but to recognize that the meaning assigned to awareness is what generates the effect.

## Practical implications

The practical move the transcripts recommend is to give every situation a positive meaning even when your physical mind cannot see how it could serve you. The physical mind is not designed to know how something will play out; that is the higher mind's role. The physical mind's job is to know what is happening right now and to choose the meaning, trusting that staying in a positive state makes the positive result receivable.

When you find yourself in a limbo or watering period, the recommendation is to treat it as choice-space rather than as stuckness: you are in neutral precisely so you can pick what to grow next. Hearing other people's interpretations of your state is framed as useful contrast — it shows you definitions you do not hold, sharpening the one you prefer.

The teaching does not ask the learner to pretend a painful event is pleasant. It asks them to assign the event a meaning that makes a positive outcome extractable, on the premise that the event's inherent neutrality makes that assignment mechanically effective. No medical, legal, or financial direction is implied: a neutral reading of a serious situation does not replace professional, medical, legal, or financial action; it governs the meaning-layer that shapes the experience of whatever action is taken.

## Representative passages

Nothing in life has built in meaning. The greatest gift all of you have ever been given is that life is meaningless — you are designed to give life meaning. The meaning you give to every situation, positive or negative, determines how you experience the effect of that situation in your life. Negative meaning in, negative effect out. Positive meaning in, positive effect out. Every single situation has the ability to serve double duty; you decide what effect it will have by the definitions you assign to it.— Bashar, Nothing In Life Has Built In Meaning (nothing-in-life-has-built-in-meaning#qa-2)

You are now all exploring the very idea of neutrality itself — the fact that everything is fundamentally blank, empty, devoid of meaning until you decide what meaning it has. The meaning you decide to assign to any given situation is the act of creation of manifestation itself.— Bashar, Nothing At All (nothing-at-all#qa-9)

Depression is meditation judged. ... Old definitions can allow them to take any level of energy and turn it into any idea, positive or negative.— Bashar, Nothing At All (nothing-at-all#qa-8)
