The teaching is introduced in the same opening monologue that introduces vibrational residue, and the two ideas are paired: the domain is the where — the frequency band of the circumstance — and the residue is the what that accumulates within it. This chapter treats the domain concept itself; the sibling vibrational-residue chapter treats the deposit-and-return mechanism that operates inside a domain. ## A domain is a bandwidth of vibration Bashar defines the term directly in the session's opening: "resonance domains, frequency domain, strata of experiences that are each representative of a particular bandwidth or frequency or rate of vibration of energy." A domain is thus not a place in space but a band of frequency — the range of vibration that characterizes a class of experience. The frequency you operate on determines which band of reality you sample, and therefore what gets reflected back to you. Because a domain is defined by frequency rather than by location or chronology, the same kind of circumstance — traffic, a recurring relational pattern, a familiar room — can be the entry point to the same domain each time you meet it on the same frequency. The domain is what is stable; the surface circumstance is its local appearance. ## How residue accrues within a domain The domain concept earns its place in the teaching because it explains where vibrational residue lives. Bashar says that your actions and responses "actually create, in a sense, a reservoir, or a build-up of vibrational residue in a particular frequency domain." The frequency you emit in a circumstance is deposited into the band that matches it, and that band is the one you will re-encounter when you next enter the same kind of circumstance on the same frequency. This is the structural reason the residue is self-created rather than imposed: you are filling the very domain you will later sample. Change the frequency you emit and you change which domain you inhabit, which is the same act as leaving a different deposit behind. The clearing of residue — taken up in the vibrational-residue chapter — is therefore a change of domain, not a scrubbing of a fixed place. ## Practical implications Notice that the recurring circumstances of your life are entry points into frequency domains; the stable thing is the band, the local circumstance is its appearance. The question to ask of a recurring pattern is which frequency band it belongs to, not only what happened this time. Because residue accrues in the domain that matches the frequency you emit, the way to meet a familiar circumstance differently is to enter it on a different frequency. Bashar frames this as the same mechanism as self-created karma: you are always sampling the band you are vibrating.
