# State of Being

In Bashar's vocabulary, state of being is the operative word for what most people call mood, attitude, or vibration — the actual frequency you are momentarily being. The teaching's central move is to relocate cause from the outer circumstance to the inner state: state of being is the real reality, the actual experience, while circumstances and situations are illusionary, neutral reflections that carry no substance of their own. Any number of different circumstances can represent the same state, and any one state can produce a wide range of outer forms. The practical question is therefore not "how do I change my situation?" but "what state am I now being — and is that the state I prefer to be?"

## The outer mirror is the effect, not the cause

Bashar frames physical reality as literally a mirror: it reflects your strongest beliefs, thoughts, and concepts of what is possible and most likely. The mirror cannot smile until you do, and once you do smile it cannot contradict you. The implication is mechanical, not philosophical: if you change your inner state, the outer reflection must eventually change to match; but the change of state has to be unconditional, not a covert bargain with reality ("I will change if the outside changes back"). If you make the inner change conditional on outer results, you have placed the power outside yourself again, and the change short-circuits.

The test of real change is that you behave differently than you did before even when the outside has not yet changed; once that is true, the outside has no choice but to mirror you.

## State generates itself when you exhibit it

A distinctive Bashar claim is that the state you decide to inhabit is what you get, regardless of how it initially feels. This is why you can simply choose to be happy for its own sake, with no other reason, and why acting on passion must be backed by being passionate about being passionate: the state generates itself when you exhibit it. You do not wait to feel passionate to act passionately; you act passionately and the state follows. This is also why definitions matter so much: the same outer event becomes evidence for joy or for despair depending on the state from which you read it.

## No one can impose a wavelength on you

A relationship exchange sharpens the same point interpersonally. Asked about a father who "imposes his wavelength" on others, Bashar's answer is structural: no one can actually impose a wavelength on anyone. Other people may choose to believe it is possible and so create that same wavelength in their own reality, but the person offering the wavelength has no power to install it in you if you do not mirror it back. Choosing your vibrational state means choosing what you prefer regardless of anyone else's intention toward you, because they have no effect on you if you do not choose to be affected.

The corollary is sharp: if you are affected, you are simply creating the same wavelength out of your own energy.

The relational application is to stay in compassion rather than to mirror others' pain. By remaining in a vibration of compassion, you know you are connected to others even when they choose the experience of disconnection — because actual disconnection is impossible; only the experience of disconnection can be created, and the only way to create that experience is from within the connected whole.

## Inertia is dissimilar frequencies meeting

Bashar offers a precise analogy for why changing state can feel sluggish: sociological inertia — the sluggishness you feel trying to move toward something you say you want — is the effect created by the relative interaction between dissimilar frequencies of matter. Your spacecraft, he notes, can stop abruptly or make right-angle turns at enormous speeds without harming the occupants because the craft, the air within it, and the occupants all operate on one frequency, becoming one homogeneous substance. There is nothing inside the craft moving relative to anything else; the whole vehicle is a single block.

The same applies sociologically: the only reason there is resistance and friction in your life is that you are not on the same frequency as the event or vehicle you say you want to be part of. The way to overcome inertia is to accelerate your vibratory frequency to match the idea — to feel equal to it, not less than it — and then you move through it smoothly, at the speed of thought, with no resistance.

## The 15-second rule for natural anger

For a learner watching the state day to day, Bashar offers a precise diagnostic: natural anger lasts only about 10 to 15 seconds. Anything that lasts longer than that is no longer natural anger but negative judgment — usually self-judgment projected outward. The corollary is that a habit is something you do that you do not know you are doing; the moment you become aware of a habit, it is already gone. Awareness of a habit is not the beginning of letting it go, it is the end of it.

This gives a concrete test: if you are angry for minutes rather than seconds, the work is not to discharge the anger at the trigger but to find the self-judgment it is clothing.

## Practical implications

Treat the outer circumstance as a feedback system, not as a cause. It is showing you the beliefs you hold most true; if you do not prefer the reflection, change the definition that produces it rather than fighting the reflection.

Make inner changes unconditionally. The test of a real change is that you behave as the preferred state even when the outer mirror has not yet moved; the moment you make the change contingent on outer results, the change is short-circuited.

When affected by another person's state, recognize that the wavelength you are experiencing is being generated by you out of your own energy. No one imposes a wavelength; you mirror it or you do not.

Stay in compassion toward people who choose disconnection. The experience of disconnection can be created, but actual disconnection cannot — remaining compassionate keeps you knowing the connection is intact even when the experience of it appears to break.

When you feel friction or inertia toward something you say you want, treat it as a frequency mismatch, not a character flaw. The remedy is to bring yourself into alignment with the idea — feel equal to it — rather than to push harder against the resistance.

Use the 15-second rule as a self-check: anger that lasts longer than about 15 seconds has become negative self-judgment, and the work is to find the judgment rather than to keep justifying the anger.

## Representative passages

Physical reality is a mirror, a reflection of your strongest beliefs, your strongest thoughts, what you believe is possible, most likely to occur… the secret of true change is that you will change and will behave differently than you did before, even if the outside reflection is still the same.— Bashar, The Illusion Of Power (the-illusion-of-power#text)

It's not possible for him to impose his wavelength on anyone… when we talk about the idea of choosing your vibrational state, it's about choosing what you prefer regardless of what anyone else's intention is toward you, because they have no effect on you if you don't choose to be affected.— Bashar, Relationships Choosing Your Vibrational State Or Wavelength (relationships-choosing-your-vibrational-state-or-wavelength#qa-1)

The only way you can create an experience of disconnection is if you're connected to all that is. And you are part of all that is.— Bashar, Relationships Choosing Your Vibrational State Or Wavelength (relationships-choosing-your-vibrational-state-or-wavelength#qa-1)

Inertia is the effect created by the relative interaction between dissimilar frequencies of matter… the only reason there is resistance and friction in your lives is because you may not be of the same frequency as the idea, the event, the vehicle you say you want to be a part of.— Bashar, Overcoming Inertia (overcoming-inertia#text)

Natural anger only lasts about 15 seconds. If it lasts longer than that, it's negative judgment… a habit is something you do that you don't know you're doing; once you're aware the habit is there, it's gone. Awareness of the habit is not the beginning of letting it go, it's the end of it.— Bashar, Relationships Choosing Your Vibrational State Or Wavelength (relationships-choosing-your-vibrational-state-or-wavelength#qa-2)
