# Surrender & Letting Go

Surrender, in Bashar's teaching, is the act of giving up the personality — the limiting structure of beliefs and definitions you were taught to think you are supposed to be — in order to rest as the unlimited possibility you are created in the image of the infinite. It is not losing control; it is claiming your birthright. The word is used precisely against its common meaning: most people on your planet use surrender to mean giving up, losing something of yourself, handing your power over. Bashar means the opposite — the cessation of trying to be who you think you need to be and the beginning of simply allowing yourself to be who you are.

## Surrender is the most important tool, and the last

Bashar presents surrender as the concept that sums up all the other tools and techniques, the umbrella under which they all fall. It is described as the most important and critical concept he can share — saved until last because, had he begun with it fifteen years ago, none of you would have understood what it meant. The other tools were a ladder, composed of rungs leading from the familiar to the unfamiliar, so the transition could be made step by step. Now that the rungs have brought you within reach, surrender is revealed as the simplest and therefore the most powerful of the tools. The paradox of the process is that the many tools were given partly so that, over time, you would finally decide you did not need so many tools.

## Surrendering the personality, not the self

The distinction that makes the teaching usable is what is being surrendered: the limiting personality mask, not the self. When you surrender the limiting personality mask that prevents you from seeing that you are an infinite being, you allow the universe — which is a mirror — to reflect not just the limited personality you think you are supposed to be, but the unlimited possibilities you actually are. Your life can then become a continuing series of synchronistic circumstances that support and benefit you. This is framed as physics, not a nice idea.

The fear that giving up pain and unworthiness will erase your individuality is answered directly. Surrender does not erase individuality; it lets you experience both unity and multiplicity at once — this and that, not this or that. When you totally surrender and become the I-am, you experience the I-am as yourself, because you are the I-am from a particular point of view. Choice still remains: giving up pain and struggle does not mean you cannot still choose to experience yourself in any way you desire relative to the whole.

## Surrender is allowing control, not abandoning it

The apparent contradiction — that surrender means letting go of control while you still want some control — is resolved by inverting the definition. Surrender is actually allowing control, because you are already in control. When you believe you have to make things happen, force things to happen instead of allowing them to, you actually believe you are not in control. When you surrender, you give over to the fact that things are already perfectly under control. This is why a permission slip often works: it occupies the physical mind so the real control can operate automatically, like giving a child a steering wheel that is not connected to anything so the adult can drive.

## The AAA formula: acknowledge, appreciate, allow

The practical mechanism of allowance is the three-part formula Bashar calls acknowledge, appreciate, allow. When something representative of your joy manifests, stop — do not rush ahead asking for more. Take a moment to acknowledge what you have just been given; this brings you back into the present. Then take the next moment to appreciate it, entering a state of gratitude and grace, which adds powerful energy to the process. Then allow what needs to happen next to happen, without forcing, manipulating, or making it work. It may not always be what you think, but it will always be what you need. By not rushing after more, you let the next synchronistic step arrive on its own — and it arrives faster than when you chase it.

## True surrender makes you more capable, not less

A key test distinguishes genuine surrender from dissociation. You will know a true active surrender is operating when you find yourself more capable on all levels, not less. The assumption that surrender puts you into a mindless state is exactly backwards: in true surrender you become more aware of all your aspects, and the personality becomes a vehicle for expression rather than a mask. Total surrender automatically encompasses physicality and shows you where physicality fits within the act of surrender; you do not have to make them integrate. If you feel you have to force the integration, you are not surrendering.

The same test reads inside the body. Many techniques — breathing to center, for instance — are useful only when they are not turned into a worry. When you get into the centered space, do you feel at peace, loved, humble, great? If so, the breath is serving the surrender. But breathing into the moment while worrying that breathing into the moment is a manipulation is very far from letting go. The breath is fine; the worry about the breath is the opposite.

## The suspended moment and the I-am

The experiential core of surrender is the suspended moment. In that immediacy you can be completely grounded and completely expanded at once, because everything — time-space, everything — is suspended by the recognition of who and what you are. You can remember from experience what that suspended moment was, and you can understand that that moment is the only moment there is. All of creation is in that moment. The moment may seem like a flicker, but it is the moment; the I-am and you specifically are everything simultaneously.

## Practical implications

Surrender the limiting personality mask, not the self. What you let go of is the structure of beliefs that hides your unlimited nature; the self remains, freed to be mirrored as unlimited possibility.

Read surrender as allowing control. Things are already perfectly under control; forcing is the symptom of believing they are not. A permission slip can occupy the physical mind so the real mechanism can work.

Use the AAA formula on any manifestation. Acknowledge what arrived, appreciate it fully, then allow the next step without forcing; what comes may not be what you think, but it will be what you need.

Measure surrender by capability, not by numbness. True active surrender leaves you more capable on all levels; the personality becomes a vehicle, and physicality fits naturally inside the act.

Do not turn the technique into the worry. A centering breath is fine; the worry that the breath is a manipulation is itself the opposite of letting go.

Expect unity and multiplicity at once. Surrender does not erase your individual point of view; you experience the I-am as yourself, from a particular point of view.

Boundary note. Bashar's surrender teaching is metaphysical framing about releasing the grip of limiting beliefs and outcome-control. It is not direction to accept harm, to abandon discernment, to forgo professional or medical support, or to stop taking ordinary practical action; the test of genuine surrender is that you become more capable, not less.

## Representative passages

When we talk about the idea of surrender, we are not talking about the idea of invalidating who you are. Rather, just the opposite. We are talking about the idea of total validation of who you are … What we mean here is the stopping, the cessation of trying to be who you think you need to be and the beginning of simply allowing yourself to be who you are. To surrender the personality game … When you surrender the limiting personality mask, you are then allowing the universe, which is a mirror, to reflect not just the limited personality but the unlimited possibilities you actually are.— Bashar, Surrender (surrender#qa-1)

Surrender is actually allowing control, because you're already in control. When you believe you have to make things happen, force things to happen instead of allowing them to, you actually believe you are not in control. But when you surrender, you are actually giving over to the fact that things are already perfectly under control.— Bashar, Allowance (allowance#qa-2)

The three A's: acknowledge, appreciate, and then allow. When you have manifested something that is reflective of your joy, your excitement, your preference, stop, don't ask for more. … Allow what the next thing is that needs to happen to happen. It may not always be what you think, but it will always be what you need.— Bashar, Allowance (allowance#qa-1)

A true active surrender, you will know it's a true active surrender when you find yourself more capable on all levels, not less. … Total surrender automatically encompasses physicality and allows you to understand where physicality fits within the act of surrender. You don't have to make them integrate. If you feel like you have to make them integrate, then you are not surrendering.— Bashar, Surrender (surrender#qa-8)

Choice. You still have that choice. It is not a given that giving up all your pain and suffering and struggle means that you cannot still choose to experience yourself in any way, shape or form you so desire relative to the whole. … It is this and that, not this or that.— Bashar, Surrender (surrender#qa-5)

In that immediacy, you can be completely grounded and be completely expanded because everything is suspended, time space, everything, but it's suspended by the recognition that that's who and what you are. … There is only one moment. All of creation is in that moment.— Bashar, Surrender (surrender#qa-7)
